victorian clothes and victorian mysteries
May. 25th, 2006 09:03 pmWhy do I always miss the Sherlock Holmes Society meetings when we're discussing one of the better stories? I love "The Naval Treaty"! (Of course, I love it more since I saw the Granada episode, where Jeremy Brett wears a wider variety of gorgeous Victorian suits than any other episode! My costume lust has fully extended to men's costumes, you just can't watch as much Sherlock Holmes as I do and not have that happen if you're a costume geek.)
Women's costumes are still much easier for me though. The 1870's doll dress is almost done; I finished the jacket, and I can't believe how perfectly it turned out, considering this is the first time I had to make my own pattern for something. Now all I need to do is figure out how to make the skirt on my own. I'm not worried though, since it's only a doll dress, and if you screw up you've only wasted a few inches rather than a few yards of fabric! After all, it's about time I got down to actually constructing something I've designed!
Finally saw the first Murder Rooms (the only one that's on DVD! ARG!). I didn't think I'd like it as much as the episodes, since it has a different actor playing Doyle, but I liked both the Doyles, and furthermore, it was a really good movie. Ian Richardson is so good in it; I actually think he's even better as Bell than as Holmes; now that he's older he's acquired a certain gravitas that he was lacking in his younger days. (He's still one of the better screen Holmeses though.) And I just love all that dark Victorian stuff. Even the romance was well done; very subtle and non-syrupy. I just wish they'd have continued the series longer; they always pull the plug on the best ones after only four episodes! Murder Rooms and The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries were my favorites, and each with only one movie and four episodes! Whereas the boring series go on forever. Sigh. At least the new Miss Marple is going to have another season of episodes! Hurrah! I can't wait till June!
