While going through old magazine articles I'd saved, I noticed on the back of one an ad for Jane Eyre: The Broadway Musical. Now, years ago when I first saw this, it made me laugh my head off; what could be more ridiculous, right? But now I'm kind of intrigued, and I'm currently listening to the cast recording.

*sheepish grin*

And I actually like it. I feel it's maybe a little heavy handed in the beginning with the doom and gloom, and Jane's yearning for freedom is couched in a bit too modern of terms, but after that it's quite good. I do, however, question the choice of singer for the title role, her voice is so deep and mature, which seems a little out of place when she's suposed to be playing a shy 18 year old governess; and some of it does make me laugh a little when Rochester is angsting, because it's kind of hard to seem truly angsty using a well disicplined musical theater voice, but hey. There are some lovely songs; "In the Light of the Virgin Morning" is my favorite, aside from just being gorgeous, I love the counterpoint of Jane and Blanche, both musically and dramatically, with the one saying how her hopes are disappointed but she's still in love, and the other saying how her hopes are realized but she's not in love. It's very poignant and pretty. It makes me wish I had someone I could sing a duet with! I don't even think I have anyone who knows I can sing at all, come to that! It's so weird, but I find it much harder to sing in front of family and friends than in front of an auditorium full of strangers, which doesn't even make me batt an eyelash.
