Oct. 24th, 2008 04:50 pmUgh. I have such a sore throat. And my birthday is tomorrow. I hope it doesn't turn out to be anything serious, because I have plans, darn it! (Which first and foremost includes getting my free birthday sundae at Culver's. No malady is going to keep me from that sweet sweet frozen custard!!)
Listening to more cast albums. This week has been musical comedies, On the Twentieth Century and The Drowsy Chaperone. Both have several laugh out loud moments, I must say. I prefer On the Twentieth Century; good old Comden and Green can't be beat, and no one is funnier than Madeline Kahn. It's just a fact. The show's got this crazy operetta score when it's actually a 1930's show-biz tale, and it's just hilarious. Imogene Coca has a priceless number, and John Cullum, who has such a beautiful voice, really uses it to comic effect playing this totally hammy character. Every single track is comedy gold, and I was completely rolling on the floor during 'She's a Nut'. Trust me, listen to this. If only for the rarity of a modern(ish) musical comedy that's actually funny and well performed.
The Drowsy Chaperone is even more of a rarity, being a brand spanking new musical comedy that's actually funny. You've heard me bemoan the current state of the Broadway Musical, and Drowsy Chaperone is a little ray of light. The songs are more just funny than brilliantly good, but I laughed at the end of 'As We Stumble Along' and through the 'Bride's Lament', and the stuff with the Man in Chair is the best. The touring company is going to come through town in March, I think, and I might actually be tempted to go and see it on stage.
The medival dress has sleeves cut out! I did it! Now to actually sew them on...
