Well, The Duchess was as bad as I thought it would be. A very shallow and sensationalized portrait, and badly miscast (Keira Knightly just seemed too much the gawky modern teenager. She and Hayley Atwell should have switched roles, especially since Hayley quite looks like the real Georgiana. And they shouldn't have cast Ralph Fiennes at all if they were trying to make the Duke seem like LESS of an awful tyrannical monster! Yeah, casting one of the creepiest actors alive will really accomplish that goal!) But I was most disappointed in the costumes, they were all so dark! Late 18th century fashion was all light, bright, and frothy! And Georgiana was one of they most fashion forward ladies of her day! She wouldn't have been caught dead in most of that stuff. And the promotional photos looked so promising! Oh well! I guess I can always go watch Marie Antoinette again. Now that was a good 18th century costume biopic! Or Casanova. Or even The Affair of the Necklace. Or even Aristocrats. And speaking of Aristocrats, I had a major stroke of luck yesterday when I found the illustrated companion book for $2 at a yard sale! Hardcover! Like new! Now I can look at the pretty clothes without having to sit through hours of boring miniseries! Plus it has paintings and info about the real Lennox sisters, which is terribly cool. I always find that somehow real people's stories are more interesting in their own words and those of their contemporaries than any fictionalized accounts are.
And thanks be to heaven above, because it turns out my blocked tear duct is sinus related, so the answer is allergy meds, not surgery. There aren't words to describe how awesome this is, and how freaking happy I am that I'm hopefully on the road to recovery at last! \o/
