Finally saw Marie Antoinette the other day. I didn't know whether to look at the clothes or the food, everything was so gorgeous. And it wasn't actually a bad movie, which I really expected it to be considering it was written by Sofia Coppola, and Lost in Translation was one of the absolute worst films on every level that I've ever seen. But MA was very lightweight, and didn't try to be a grand epic and moralize and make grand judgements about her, which was probably what saved it. It's mostly a slice-of-life movie, although of a very extreme kind of life to be sure. And I really loved the awesome 80's New Wave-ish soundtrack. I think modern pop music actually works better than period music on this kind of movie, because it's all about that feeling of being young and bored and angsty and having too much time and money on your hands, which is basically what all modern pop music is about, whereas in the 18th century, not so much. But I really do need to go out and get the soundtrack now. Wouldn't it be fun to have an 80's party and dress up in 80's clothes and dance to New Wave music all night? (Yes, you've discovered my secret: I have a hidden fondness for 80's teen movies and New Wave Music! I'm not in fact dead to eveything after the 19th century, as some people seem to think!)
Also, finished the houppelande I started for Skipper, although it turned out a little bigger than I expected and now it fits Barbie instead. The only thing is I'm not sure how to finish off the belt, since there's no way to get any belt buckles tiny enough for a Barbie doll, let alone period 15th century belt buckles that small. I've just got it tied on now, which looks terrible from the back, but maybe I'll come back to it later and put a snap on or something. We'll see.
Also, am I the only one who cringes every time Molly Ringwald takes that beautiful pink dress and cuts it up to make that hideous sack she calls a prom dress whenever I watch Pretty in Pink? ;-D
