Does it mean I'm getting old if I don't feel the need to rush out and buy the last Harry Potter book at the stroke of midnight? I mean, I went to the bookstore that night, and it was kind of exciting to see a bookstore so full, and to see everybody dressed up (there were some pretty amazing costumes, I saw a group of teenagers dressed up as a whole quidditch team, brooms and quaffles and all), and to see a whole range of people, from kids to adults, all really excited about the same thing, and a book no less. But after about an hour of the madness, (and I mean madness, when I walked in the door and heard the screaming coming from the back of the store, I thought there was a fire or something, but it turned out it was just the costume contest. Which I would have liked to have seen, but the crowds were so thick you could not get through to see anything) I got a headdache and decided to go home. I mean, it just wasn't justifiable to sit through another hour of two of that to buy a book that I had a hold on at the library anyway. And even if I won't get it from the library for another couple of weeks, isn't it worth a few weeks wait to get it for free, rather than get a headdache and shell out 25 bucks? We've waited this long, after all. What's another month when it's been how many years? But the other people at the bookstore looked at me like I was crazy when I left early. And I'm like 'it's just a book' and they're like 'OMFG how can you say that?!'. People are really obsessed. There was a scavenger hunt with little trivia questions thoughout the store, and I'm playing it to pass the time, and most of them I know, (which kind of shocks me, since it's several years since I read the early ones) but occasionaly there's a really obscure one that I just have no idea the answer to. And I comment to my mom that I haven't a clue what Dumbledore's favorite jam is, and some random person who overhears me says, "it's raspberry!" really fervently, like she's imparting me with the secret to eternal youth. And I'm like 'oh okay' but I'm thinking to myself, "why on earth does she know this? She's an adult, with kids, and most likely a job, why the heck does she make a point to know Dumbledore's favorite jam? And tell people? Like spreading the gospel?" I suppose better that than most other things, but still. Fandom is just so odd. And I'm pretty fangirl-y myself, but in a general way; there's lots of stuff I'm into, and admittedly I can be pretty hardcore, but no one thing takes over my life. But maybe really rabid fandom is a communal thing; if I'd had a whole group of friends to go with, I'd probably have dressed up and stayed till midnight for the book too.

Saw a hawk at the park the other day. I was just walking along and it swooped in front of me and landed in a tree less than ten feet away from me. I just sat and watched it for a while until it flew away because it's just so unusual and cool to see a wild hawk in real life. And at the rate people are destroying their habitats, hawks and a lot of other animals might not be around in the wild when the next generation grows up. Isn't that scary? I just read an article that says bees are endangered. Common bees for heaven's sake! This is why I don't read magazines or watch the news! It's just one horrible thing after another; and the really horrible thing is that people just don't care. Even if you reminded people that bees pollinate plants and that our eco-systems will be severly damaged if we lose them, which endangers human as well as animal life, they probably still wouldn't care, they'd be more worried about who's going to win 'American Idol' or something. I'm going to have to start wearing T-shirts that say "Save the Bees" now! Is there a Bee Preservation Fund somewhere? If there isn't we should start one! (And it would probably do a lot better than a fund to end domestic violence or something, it always amazes me that people are quicker to help animals than other people. What is wrong with society? This is why I don't like to talk about serious issues, it just makes me so upset. Ugh. It's like the old saying, "if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention." Too true.
