I've decided that the medieval dress is in fact going to be a dress, if it turns out badly I can always make it into a surcote later. Unfortunately, I only decided this the day before I somehow hurt my neck putting up a curtain rod (of all things!) and was thusly barred from any productive activity for several days. I literally couldn't move my head, it was bent over on my shoulder for two whole days and sore for several more after that, so only now do I feel up to getting off the couch and getting some sewing done!
On the bright side, all that down time allowed me to get through quite a few period dramas and even some reading. Actually got back to reading Jane Eyre and indeed, once you get past the part where she lives with her horrible aunt and cousins, it isn't as dreary as I thought it would be. Actually, far from being the usual Dickensian dirge of doom and gloom that movie adaptations usually present it as, her school years are quite normal and naturalistically written. (Or maybe that's just a sad comment on my own school experiences!)
Started watching The Bretts on DVD. I've finished the first disc and I'm utterly hooked. It reminds me a lot of The House of Eliott, except that instead of the 1920's London fashion scene, it's the 1920's London theater scene. They even have some of the same storylines (a devious embezzling business associate, secrets about who's actually related to who in the family, etc.) but I don't mind that at all because it's all so stylishly done, and it's just so much fun to watch the actors act.
Finished watching the new Sense and Sensibilty. It wasn't bad, it was even pretty good, but on the whole unneccesary. The 95 film was so incredibly awesome, why on earth did they need to make this TV version so soon? But one thing I will say for it is that I loved the actress playing Elinor. She was the best part of the whole thing; I hope she goes on to have an awesome career. But I think David Morrissey wasn't a good choice for Colonel Brandon. If you're going to cast an old guy to be the love interest for a young girl, you should cast someone with less of a creepy factor. And why on earth did the Dashwood sisters keep calling Fanny Dashwood 'Aunt Fanny'? She's their sister-in-law, not their aunt. That was just bizarre.
Also watched the Milwaukee Ballet's prodution of Romeo and Juliet on TV. Of course I'm a total sucker for Prokofiev's music, but the whole thing was wonderful. The choreography was beautiful and the costumes actually looked like real Renaissance clothing, which is really unusual for ballet! Who knew Milwaukee had such a good ballet company?
