I'm very excited about this weekend, because the Wisconsin Book Festival is having an event, The Fine Art of Children's Book Illustration, which will feature a panel dicussion with two of my favorite illustrators, Renee Graef and Nancy Ekholm Burkert! Renee Graef illustrated the Kirsten books from the American Girls collection, and Nancy Ekholm Burkert did the most exquisite set of illustrations for Snow White and the Seven Dwarves that I've ever seen, among other things. Who knew they were both from Wisconsin! Needless to say, I'm going to this thing come hell or high water, and I'm so incredibly excited!

Actually cut out a toile for the burgundian dress, but considering the sewing machine is still buried under a mountain of junk, I don't feel like I'm accomplishing much. Sigh.

Also, been reading (or more acurately, looking at) a lovely book, Ingres in Fashion: Representations of Dress and Appearance in Ingres's Images of Women by Aileen Ribeiro. The text is shockingly useless and stupid, I've always enjoyed Ribeiro's books on costume, but I think when she tries to be an art critic she misses the mark entirely. But the text isn't the point; the point is a whole book of Ingres paintings and drawings of beautiful and well dressed ladies from the first half of the 19th century! I'm so keen on this whole era now, I've been playing with jewelry and hair and doing sketches and matching fabrics, and maybe some kind of actual costuming progress will result! But I'll need a lot of work on the hair! I tried to do that 1840's style that I always call 'Jane Eyre hair' because every single actress playing Jane in every adapation wears it; it's the one where the hair from the front is brought back to twist around the bun, but it's harder than it looks, and one person alone cannot accomplish it without it looking really messy. All the movie versions where Jane has this hairdo are tainted for me now, the illusion of reality is gone; I know what you see on screen is the result of hours of work by wigmakers and/or hairdressers!

eggh i thought jane's hair in the last adaptation was horrid, but it's supposed to be like that haha. she can't be glamorous and all that so it was suitable. blanche's hair was also annoying, but appropriate, but she was too skinny....she's supposed to be "buxom" acc. to the text.
